In 1974, having established himself as America’s premier magazine cover photographer, Ozzie Sweet expanded into the book market. Loggerhead Turtle: Survivor from the Sea kicked off what would become an 18-book series over 14 years. Produced as educational titles for young readers, the books featured Sweet photography paired with text by noted author Jack Denton Scott.
The series took Sweet all over the place: from Maine (for the book Moose) to Florida (Alligator), and from Virginia (Island of Wild Horses) to the Dakota plains (Return of the Buffalo), and from the Atlantic Ocean (The Gulls of Smuttynose Island, photographed 10 miles off the coast of New Hampshire) to Alaska (The Fur Seals of the Pribilof). Along the way, Ozzie also photographed goats, pigs, and prairie dogs, and storks, swans, and submarine birds, among others.
